A good example of formal-informal or
semi-formal relationship can be of your relationship with your teacher and/or
boss. In class or at office, you strictly follow formal behaviour. But its
possible that your group goes out with their teacher/boss for a lunch or dinner
where you adopt a bit of informal behaviour. You share jokes, pass comments,
etc. that creates a friendly environment but you still have to maintain formal
barriers. Likewise, at some point in life you might need to convey them
best wishes, ask for their valuable advice, or simply thank them for something,
etc. which may only be possible via a letter.
For geeks, this example can easily be validated by using three very good points as evidence. These are:
• First, not everyone in your class or among your peers would be able to develop long term relationship with your teacher or boss.
• Second, your teacher or boss is pretty much less likely (almost no chances at all) to share his/her personal postal address publicly with their students or subordinates.
• And third, even if by chance you get to know there personal postal address, what do you anticipate would be there reaction on seeing your letter at first instance. Would they welcome it? Of course not.
But the other side of the coin for all of the above three is probably a big 'YES' which is only possible when your formal relationship with your teacher/boss is flexible enough to adjust a bit of informality.
